Thanks for the clarifications and further info, Johnnie. I do admit a bit of disappointment when it was stated that this was not quite the "complete" release I had expected. Don't get me wrong. I understand that no matter how much testing you do nothing matches the input you get from "in the wild" feedback. I just was not expecting a "beta" this week. I also admit that I am not as adventurous as I once was when it comes to software and what I place on my work systems. Having said all that, I am quite anxious to use Moviestorm 1.4 and its new features. As I have stated, I am looking forward to the new head creator.

Again, thanks for the comment and info. You're always welcome here. Take care, be well, keep flying!

"get the distinct impression we are beta-testing something that isn’t labeled a beta. Sorry, I’ll wait for the “complete” and “official” release."

Sure - that's absolutely fine. Moviestorm 1.4 has not been officially released yet. What we made available yesterday was an early access release. If you were to think of it as a beta, you wouldn't be far wrong. In fact, we have a place on our forums specifically for people to let us know about any bugs they encounter with it (http://www.moviestorm.co.uk/forums/index.php?s=0&showtopic=9179&hl=).

This early access release is not an obligatory upgrade for anyone. You can carry on using 1.3 if you wish, with no problems at all. We've done early access releases a few times in the past, though, and they've proven popular - but if you'd prefer to wait for the official release, that's fine.

"Nor do I wish to add programs such as “boot.win” to my computer all for the benefit of experimenting with a program the developers have admitted is not complete."

Just to clarify, boot.win is not a "program" in the sense I think you're meaning. It's just a text file. In fact, you already have a copy (in the boot folder of your Moviestorm installation). The boot file we ask you to add in order to run 1.4 just changes which bit of our server Moviestorm tries to talk to (which, in turn, makes Moviestorm grab the 1.4 patch). When we make the official 1.4 release, obviously there'll be no need to do this: Moviestorm will update automatically.

If you're in any doubt as to what the boot file does, you can open it in notepad and read the contents. If you compare your existing boot file with the boot file for 1.4, you'll see that only a single line has changed.

I should probably also point out that you can have Moviestorm 1.3 installed, and install a second version of Moviestorm running 1.4 Early Access - the two installations won't conflict unless you literally try to run them both at the same time.

Thanks for the post - keep up the great work on this blog.

Thanks, Ricky, I appreciate it. I really do. Right now I'm just waiting for the insurance company and the doctors to decide who has the better medical knowledge as to what tests are really needed for a proper diagnosis. ;-) Now is a lousy time to realize I should never have placed my computer room in the basement. :-( Take care, be well and keep flying!

Demented! I love it! Yeah, its usually better to just go with your first impulsive, honest thoughts. Although I think that's what got me married. Hmm... Anyway, I thought you nailed it right on. I remember the first time I saw "She Hasn't Touched Her Soup." I about died. So simple, yet so funny. We won't even delve into "Male Restroom Etiquette." Great. Demented may very well be the correct term. But I like demented. ;-) The only boundaries in machinima are the ones we make and folks like Phil make it clear there doesn't have to be any boundaries! Thanks for stopping by, RG. Take care, be well, keep flying!

Hey, thanks for the plug, my friend. Because I'm a dumbell, I missed the Premiere of FIRST Sunday morning, so when Phil wrote to tell me he had posted it on Vimeo I immediately headed over there and watched the film. I was so impressed I sat down and wrote out my blog post all in a heat. Only very minor changes were made after I re-read it once or twice. Now, I can see some grammar problems, but what the hell it's my honest gut feelings. Phil's always had a satirical bent, but nothing as dark or as demented as FIRST. That last outtake with the final MeFirster is remarkable acting. Very glad Phil is there to show us how machinima can be done.

I too noticed that section and I have to assume that the root of it revolves around paying royalties to any union members involved in the fan film... Assuming that you 'hired' a SAG actor/actress and MTV/Atom/Spike would have to track views and report that to SAG. Even if the actor's royalty was contracted to a bare min. fee, even a .01 royalty check would have to be processed by SAG..... If a union writer was involved in the script, tracking internet royalties would also be required, among other media showing, remember the strike two years ago...

But the question does present itself to be since the people involved in last year’s Saber short were SAG actress’ (Clare Grant and Rileah Vanderbilt) and a Writers Guild member(Adam Green, which he ‘wrote’ while on strike). I very highly doubt that a SAG contract was signed for that short film....

I personally think the union clause is B.S. but everyone involved becomes liable if you use union or guild members...

Welcome to Cyber Hermit, lopas. I think we're talking about two different uses. The avatar creation discussed above is for use within the iClone animation program for creating animated/machinima films. Geovid's video avatar creator, unless I am mistaken, is primarily for the creation of avatars for use online as part of an online profile or signature. I would not want to try and create an animation series or production with Geovid's video avatar creator. It would be quite a challenge, however... ;-)
