Perhaps one of the most anticipated films derived from a videogame. Yes, there has been that much hype about this in the gaming community. This is Part 1 of what is a five-part production. “Forward Unto Dawn” will be released as an intact 90-minute DVD film once all five parts have been released on Machinima Prime which is, of course, a lead-in to the November 6th release of Halo 4.
I have been torn over whether to embed this here on Cyber Hermit. After all, this is what $10 million from Microsoft will get you and how many of us have had access to that much cash lately? But I decided to post it because it does give us a chance to compare this to the various fan films and/or webisodes in various stages of production. Also, there are things to be learned from watching “Forward Unto Dawn.” I like the fact that this is not, at least so far, some Michael Bay-like shoot ‘em up, blow ‘em up, burn ‘em up special effects shell. There has been, again so far, an attempt to instill some heart and depth into the characters. They have not been mere placeholders for the next boom. Granted, you will not find any Oscar-contending performances here. But I have seen a helluva lot worse in films costing a helluva lot more with a helluva lot bigger names. There is decent to good acting, a decent script and, so far, good execution. More than enough here to justify tuning into the next installment. And it does not necessarily take $10 million to get that for your project.

Thomas Lasky came to Corbulo Academy of Military Science with his mother and brother’s impressive military careers hanging over his head. Haunted by ghosts from his past, he has serious doubts about the war he’s expected to fight. As fellow cadet Chyler Silva tries to help him find his place at the academy, tensions with other squad members approach the breaking point.
